We have three vendors for the XR2 Remote controls:
Phillips their versions are P1, P2
UEI their versions are U1, U2
Remote Solutions their versions are R1, R2
We have three vendors in this space so that we can drive for lower prices and improvements in technology by keeping them hungry. Comcast buys >20 Million remotes a year so we have to remain very active in managing our costs and how we interact with our vendors.
We periodically have the vendors make Firmware or hardware changes as we find issues or introduce improvements into the remotes, thus the v1, v2 versions of the XR2. All versions of each revision support the same list of devices. So no version of v2 is better or worse. A U2 is equal to P2.
The v2 version of XR2 did add the ability to program AV Devices into the remote (for Volume and Mute). Teds team is looking to expand the Audio Overlay capability to solve for the new and growing Sound Bar market that is becoming quite popular as well. It is a work in progress but it is likely that we will have a v3 version of the remotes coming out before the end of the year.
