I have Comcast X1 at my new house currently powering 3 HDTVs with X1 HD-DVR boxes plus a HSI modem (surfboard SB6141) running off of an Extreme Broadband 4-way splitter (-7db outs). The quality appears to be excellent, I've attached the signal strength from the modem as an image below.
I have 2 more outlets that I'd like to add to the system. The house came with an Antronix 8-way splitter with -11db outputs, but I don't want to waste signal with that when I only need 6 outputs. Rather than get a 6-way splitter, from what I've researched I would be better off getting a 3-way splitter to power the modem + 1 TV and then go into a 4-way splitter for the other TVs.
Assuming the 3-way into 4-way is the best option for balancing both internet and TV quality, which setup would be best?
1) Get a balanced 3-way splitter to power modem + 1 TV + split out to 4-way
2) Get an unbalanced 3-way and split the 3.5db out to the cable modem with the 7db outs to the 1 TV and then the 4-way splitter
3) Get an unbalanced 3-way and split the 3.5db out to the 4-way splitter with 7db outs to the modem and 1 TV
Anyone have any recommendations? (FYI, I feel like an amp would be overkill, only the HDTV setup on the 3-way splitter would be 1080, the rest are 720p and 42" or below - i also didn't even notice much degradation on internet or TV when I tested the 8-way splitter)
